TYPES OF STAINLESS STEEL GRADES:

Stainless steel grades are the versatile cornerstones of industries, each grade meticulously designed to address specific demands. Every grade has varying corrosion resistance, strength, and mechanical properties, making them suitable for different applications.

Grade 200 Series

an austenitic alloy

The 200 series stainless steel is a type of austenitic alloy. Austenitic stainless steel has the chemical composition of chromium, manganese, and nitrogen with a lower quantity of nickel. It has higher tensile and yield strength.

The austenitic stainless steel (200 series) is widely used in washing machines, cutlery, the automotive industry, and the food and beverage industry.

Grade 300 Series

corrosion-resistant austenitic alloys

The 300 series alloys are the best stainless steel grades, most commercially used worldwide. The 304 grade of stainless steel and 316 grades of stainless steel are among the popular alloys in the 300 series.

The grades in this series are corrosion-resistant austenitic alloys with high chromium-nickel content. In acidic environments, molybdenum increases corrosion resistance. The 300 series grades function effectively at below-freezing temperatures and have a lot of strength, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance.

Grade 400 Series

ferritic and martensitic stainless steel

The 400 series is formed by ferritic and martensitic stainless steel. It has a low nickel concentration and a higher chromium-manganese content. Grades from the 400 series provide good oxidation characteristics, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The 400 series grades are suitablein heat exchangers, fasteners, petrochemicals, turbines, and agricultural equipment.

It is cost-effective with minimal maintenance needed, and is 250 times more corrosion resistance than mild steel.

Duplex Grade

high strength coupled with corrosion resistance

Lean Duplex stainless steel grades possess high strength coupled with corrosion resistance comparable to austenitic grades like 316L. They are one of the cost-effective stainless steel grades owing to low nickel and molybdenum contents, superior mechanical properties, and good corrosion resistance.

They can also be utilised in various applications, thus providing durability and long-term cost efficiency. The Duplex stainless steel grade is utilised in making storage tanks, bridges, sluice gates, heat exchangers, water heaters, sea-water systems, and flue-gas cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stainless steel grades are distinct compositions of stainless steel that determine its specific properties and suitability for various applications. Jindal Stainless produces a wide range of grades, each tailored to offer exceptional attributes such as corrosion resistance, strength, and heat resistance. These stainless steel are crafted through an advanced manufacturing process, resulting in a diverse range of sizes and thicknesses that perfectly match a wide array of requirements.
There are over 150 grades of stainless steel, each with distinct properties and applications. These grades are categorised into five types: austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardening stainless steel. The varying compositions and structures of thegrades contribute to their diverse characteristics, making stainless steel a versatile material suitable for a wide range of industries and applications.
The best food-grade stainless steel options are 304 and 316 stainless steel from the 300 series. Renowned for their exceptional corrosion resistance, these grades ensure contamination-free food processing and storage. 304 stainless steel, recognised as 18/8, excels in cookware and kitchen equipment. Meanwhile, 316 stainless steel, enriched with molybdenum, offers heightened resistance, making it ideal for aggressive conditions and chemical exposure. Whether in food processing, cookware, or beverage equipment, these grades set the standard for food-grade stainless steel, prioritising safety and durability.
Stainless Steel 304 is a versatile austenitic alloy renowned for its remarkable corrosion resistance and durability. Its versatility shines in applications spanning kitchen equipment, automotive parts, and architectural marvels. Beyond its resilience to outdoor elements, 304 seamlessly melds in welding applications. It also embodies a blend of strength and aesthetic finesse, which makes it a prime selection for projects seeking enduring functionality infused with modern elegance.
Surgical stainless steel, often used in medical instruments and implants, typically refers to the 316L grade of stainless steel. Specifically, the "L" in 316L stands for "low carbon," which provides improved corrosion resistance in highly corrosive environments, such as those found within the human body. This grade offers excellent biocompatibility, durability, and resistance to staining and corrosion, making it suitable for surgical tools, medical equipment, and implants.
