What Determines Magnetism in Alloys?

To understand whether stainless steel is magnetic, we first need to understand how magnetism works in alloys. Magnetism is all about the spin & alignment behaviour of tiny particles called electrons in an atom and how they behave with the alloy’s structure. Stainless steel, which mainly containing iron along with other elements, follows these rules, too. 

Will a Magnet Stick to Stainless Steel?

Can a magnet stick to all types of stainless steel? Not exactly. The answer  depends on the type of stainless steel we’re talking about.

Many stainless steel items in our kitchens, ranging from spoons to refrigerator bodies, are made from a special alloy called austenitic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel grades are non-magnetic in the annealed condition, but depending on the composition of the stainless steel, may become mildly magnetic when cold-worked. This type of stainless steel usually doesn’t exhibit magnetism due to  its unique composition. On the other hand, there’s a type called ferritic stainless steel, which is often used for parts in automobiles and machines. Ferritic stainless steel is magnetic in nature.

So, whether a magnet will stick to stainless steel depends on the type of stainless steel.

Types of Stainless Steel and Their Magnetic Properties

When we talk about stainless steel, we refer to the diverse family of alloys. Iron, which is naturally magnetic, is often combined with elements like chromium, nickel, and carbon in order to improve its corrosion resistance. Stainless steel’s magnetic property fundamentally depends on its structure and composition.

There are four main types of stainless steel:

  • Ferritic Stainless Steel: Contains iron and chromium and has a ferrite type of microstructure, typically exhibits magnetism due to its structure.
  • Austenitic Stainless Steel: This variety exhibits austenite phase & is commonly non-magnetic. These alloys contain higher levels of nickel, manganese and nitrogen along with higher chromium contents.
  • Martensitic Stainless Steel: Like ferritic, this type exhibits the martensite phase, which also exhibits magnetic behaviour.
  • Duplex Stainless Steel:This type of  stainless steel consists of a  a duplex structure in them (ferrite & austenite phases). Therefore, it exhibits magnetic properties due to the presence of ferrite..

Factors That Affect Stainless Steel’s Magnetic Properties

Aside from the type of stainless steel, other factors can affect its magnetism:

  • Temperature Changes: This can alter the alloy’s internal structure, thereby affecting its magnetic properties.

  • Deformation & Ageing: As stainless steel deforms or undergoes aging, its magnetism might change.

These factors are essential for various practical reasons, such as recycling alloys and manufacturing tools or machines for environments like hospitals with MRI machines.

To sum up, when asking if stainless steel is magnetic, we need to look at the different types of stainless steel and their properties. Some are magnetic, while others are not. Where and how the stainless steel is used also matters.
