Duplex stainless steel has evolved over the years as a robust and reliable class of alloys, known for their unique microstructure composed of roughly equal parts austenite and ferrite. Originally developed as simple chromium-nickel-molybdenum ferrous alloys, these materials have seen remarkable advancements over the years.

1. Strength

Duplex grades offer approximately double the strength of standard austenitic or ferritic stainless steels.

  • Toughness: Generally higher than both austenitic and ferritic types.
  • Ductility: Superior to ferritic stainless steels, though somewhat lower than austenitic counterparts.

3. Corrosion Resistance

Duplex stainless steel possesses excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in environments containing chlorides. This is largely due to its higher content of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, which enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

4. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance

One of the best features of duplex stainless steels is their strong resistance to stress corrosion cracking, a benefit largely inherited from their ferritic structure. This makes them highly reliable in aggressive and high-temperature environments.

5. Cost Efficiency

Duplex stainless steel is often more cost-effective than its austenitic counterparts, primarily because:

  • It contains lower levels of nickel and molybdenum, which reduces material costs, especially during periods of high alloy surcharges.
  • Its high strength can allow for reduced material thickness, leading to weight savings and lower fabrication costs.

Characteristics of Duplex Stainless Steel Grades

1. Regular Duplex

Grade 2205 is the most widely used duplex stainless steel, accounting for over 80% of the market. It offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316L and nearly double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades like 304L/316L. This grade excels in pitting, crevice, and stress corrosion cracking resistance. Extensively used in the form of welded pipes, tubes, and sheets, 2205 finds applications across chemical processing, pulp and paper, petrochemical, oil and gas, desalination, power generation, architecture, biofuels, and marine transport industries.

2. Lean Duplex

Lean duplex stainless steels like UNS S32101 offer high strength and corrosion resistance at a stable cost due to their low nickel and molybdenum content. These alloys can effectively replace austenitic grades such as 304, 304L, and even 316L in many environments. Lean duplex stainless steel is applied in various sectors, including power generation, desalination, pulp and paper, oil and gas, food and beverage, potash, construction, wastewater treatment, and cargo transportation.

3. UNS S32304

UNS S32304 (EN 1.4362) is a lean duplex stainless steel offering a balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability. Its chemistry includes 21.5–24.5% Cr, 3.0–5.5% Ni, 0.05–0.6% Mo, and up to 2.5% Mn. Compared to ferritic grades, its formability is better, though not as high as austenitic grades. For fabrication, it requires higher forming loads and bend radii, with notable springback. Weld procedures like GTAW, GMAW, SAW, and PAW are suitable. Common applications include power generation components, desalination plants, food storage, pulp & paper tanks, potash industry equipment, bridges, and tanker containers.

4. Super Duplex

Super duplex stainless steels such as UNS S32750 and S32760 combine high strength with excellent corrosion resistance, making them ideal for demanding applications in chemical processing, offshore systems, and pulp mills. They offer outstanding resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. These stainless steels also have high thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion than super austenitics. 

Common uses of super duplex stainless steel include offshore platforms, petrochemical reactors, desalination plants, power FGD systems, mining pipelines, and pressure vessels across oil, gas, utility, and industrial sectors.

5. UNS S32550 

UNS S32550 is a high-strength super stainless steel offering superior corrosion, erosion, and mechanical resistance. It performs well under extreme conditions and resists a wide range of acids, including sulfuric, phosphoric, nitric, and hydrochloric, along with organic acids. Its exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-rich environments makes it ideal for the chemical process, oil and gas, petrochemical, pulp and paper, pollution control, urea, and wet phosphoric acid industries.
