Jindal Stainless emphasizes importance of Stainless Steel at National Summit on ‘Transport, Highways and Port Connectivity-2018’ seminar

new delhi, 13th august, 2018: The national summit on ‘transport, highways and port connectivity 2018’ held in new delhi today deliberated on several infrastructure related solutions with policy makers. addressing the gathering on this occasion was mr abhyuday jindal, managing director, jindal stainless. stressing upon the need to intensify usage of stainless steel in transportation and urban infrastructure, he said, “high resistance to corrosion, high strength-to-weight ratio, and ability to withstand temperature and impact shocks render stainless steel as an ideal choice for the modern day transportation and urban infrastructure. from water pipelines to public transport such as trains, metros and buses, the utility of this metal is now being recognized in all spheres”. using stainless steel in the manufacturing of a bus can reduce the weight of a bus by as much as 400 kgs. being lighter, these buses consume less fuel, which is cost and environment efficient at the same time. besides, stainless steel requires negligible spends on maintenance. “though the initial incremental cost in switching to a stainless steel bus is to the tune of rs 90,000, the life cycle cost saving for one bus, which operates over a period of 12 years, is approx rs 13 lakh per bus, and the payback period is less than 1 year”, added mr jindal.

The event was co-hosted by ministry of road, transport & highways, government of india. hon’ble minister of road transportation & highways (morth), mr nitin gadkari addressed the event which was attended by prominent government figures. present on the occasion were mr yudhvir singh malik, secretary, morth, senior members from morth, transport secretaries & commissioners of states like gujarat, goa, maharashtra, andhra pradesh, tamil nadu, odisha and telangana. the event emphasized on creating world class infrastructure in india.

Stainless steel has high weldability making it easier for manufacturing the structure of vehicles. due to its 100% recyclable nature and low-carbon print, stainless steel is a most sustainable and environmental friendly option. other than road and highways, the indian railway has begun using stainless steel to develop their coaches and bridges to reduce fatal accidents in future. stainless steel is now being used for making fuel tanks as well. while plastic fuel tanks can withstand temperatures up to 100 degree centigrade, stainless steel can withstand it up to 1000 degree centigrade.

Stainless steel has already been incorporated as an irreplaceable metal in states of karnataka, andhra pradesh, maharashtra, goa and haryana in their state road transport buses with the support of jindal stainless. “if we were to replace one steel foot over bridge in mumbai with a stainless steel one, it would not only lead to a much greater service life of 60 years, but also a saving of approx rs 60 lakhs,” said abhyuday jindal while talking about the recent bridge collapse in andheri, mumbai.
