Jindal Stainless collects 3 tonnes of plastic waste in annual collection drive on World Environment Day

New Delhi, June 05, 2024: Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless steel manufacturer, today marked the World Environment Day, kicking off a 10-day campaign to ‘Go Green’ to promote environmental sustainability among employees. As part of the initiative, the company conducted the third edition of its annual plastic waste collection drive across its corporate offices and manufacturing facilities in Jajpur, Odisha, and Hisar, Haryana, which witnessed the participation of hundreds of employees. The drive, held in association with Green Dream Foundation, a non-profit organisation, reiterates Jindal Stainless’ commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

Commenting on the occasion, Managing Director, Jindal Stainless, Mr Abhyuday Jindal, said, “We are thrilled with the success of the third edition of our plastic waste collection drive that led to a collection of 3.1 tonnes of waste, surpassing last year’s numbers by more than 55%. World Environment Day serves as a powerful reminder to cherish our planet, even if it is through small actions. At Jindal Stainless, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. And we’re committed to making a real difference and leaving a lasting positive impact for the benefit of future generations.”

More than 1,600 kg of plastic waste collected from Hisar, over 1,110 kg from Jajpur, and nearly 400 kg from corporate offices in Delhi NCR will be responsibly recycled and converted into useful products such as chairs, benches, and dustbins. These recycled items will be placed inside both plants and corporate offices as well as public spaces in consultation with local government bodies.

Besides the plastic waste collection drive, the ‘Go Green’ campaign includes an eco-challenge, which encourages employees to participate in engaging daily activities from June 5 to 15 to promote sustainable living. Apart from the activities that employees will undertake at home, there is also a virtual workshop on sustainability and zero waste on June 8 and a stepathon, a pedometer-based fitness challenge, on June 14 and 15.

Jindal Stainless is continuously striving to improve its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) score. The company plans to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and has already reduced 2.8 lakh tonnes of CO2 in the last three fiscals. It also launched India’s first Green Hydrogen Plant in the stainless steel sector recently. This plant produces 90 Nm3 of green hydrogen per hour, which will reduce 2,700 tCO2e of carbon emissions annually. Apart from this, Jindal Stainless is set to achieve its mid-term target of 50% carbon emissions reduction well before the target year of 2035 and has plans to invest INR 700 crore in numerous sustainability projects aimed at reducing 1.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

Some of the steps being taken to achieve the company’s ESG goal include generating ~1.9 billion units of clean energy per annum through various renewable energy initiatives; announcing its official commitment to the near-term science-based emissions reduction and Net Zero targets outlined by global climate action body Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi); replacing 30% of liquid fossil fuels with bio-LDO at the hot rolling mills of Hisar plant having an annual carbon reduction potential of 17,400 tCO2e; reducing the company’s water consumption intensity from 7.39 m3/tcs in FY23 to 6.41 m3/tcs in FY24; increasing the overall percentage of recycled material utilisation in input material from 60% in FY23 to 68% in FY24; and kick-starting the real-time monitoring of ESG performance in Hisar and Jajpur plants through dashboard creation for key ESG key performance indicators and greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 & 2) in the SAP system.

To show appreciation for their participation in the drive, employees were gifted eco-friendly tote bags, produced by Asmita, a unit run by women self-help group members and supported by the Jindal Stainless Foundation, as well as stainless steel spice boxes.
