How Jindal Stainless reinforced Sadhana Bhawan at Shri Kripalu Dham — without touching its soul.
In 1965, Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj founded an ashram in Mangarh, Uttar Pradesh – the village of his birth. What began as a little-known retreat grew into Shri Kripalu Dham, a spiritual haven that today draws devotees from across India and the world, anchored by the marble Bhakti Mandir and a charitable hospital that treats hundreds of patients a day, free of cost.

At the heart of the campus is Sadhana Bhawan, the meditation hall. Twice a year it fills to capacity: the spring sadhana that ends in Holi, and the month-long sadhana shivir each October. Many devotees gather here to meditate, sing and listen. For nearly sixty years, this hall has held people and their most intimate moments of devotion.
That is what made its restoration so delicate.

The structure, in numbers
Sadhana Bhawan is a large assembly hall designed to hold a congregation:

The Challenge:
Why it needed reinforcement
After nearly sixty years of continuous service — through decades of monsoons, daily use and thousands of gatherings — the structure had naturally aged. It required strengthening to keep the hall safe for the generations of devotees still to come.
However, any intervention had to be carefully planned to avoid changing the building’s appearance or disrupting its spiritual character. There was a structure that had done its duty for a very long time and now needed support to continue.
The project had to solve three challenges at once:
Structural challenge:
Strengthen load-bearing members
Material challenge:
Use a durable, corrosion-resistant material
Preservation challenge:
Protect the Bhawan’s original appearance & spiritual atmosphere
The Solution: A stainless steel shield
JSL’s approach was not to rebuild Sadhana Bhawan, but to reinforce it from within, introducing a new stainless steel structural system that would take on load alongside the original structure, without changing a single line of what devotees see.
Why 304 stainless steel ?
Grade 304 was selected to provide strength and value for an indoor, non-marine, non-industrial environment. Approximately 160+ tonnes of 304 HRAP supplied as plates. Its austenitic structure offers excellent corrosion resistance and high strength with less material. It means the reinforcement provides strong support without adding bulk.

Why it mattered?
Stainless steel advantage
-
Long-term preservation -
Minimal future disruption -
Sensitive restoration needs -
Custom structural integration
-
Exceptional corrosion resistance and lifecycle durability -
Reduced maintenance and repeated intervention -
Strong yet less intrusive structural reinforcement -
Fabrication flexibility for existing structures

How the material strengthened the structure
The 250 MT of 304 HRAP plate was fabricated into structural members — columns, beams and connecting elements, sized to the specific loads of the Bhawan. These stainless members were then jacketed around the existing load-bearing columns and beams, so the new system wraps and supports the old rather than replacing it. Connections were then reinforced with specialised concrete/mortar filling to ensure the stainless steel framework and the original structure act together as one.

Who made it happen
The project brought together Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat’s team as design consultant and Vats group for fabrication and installation, with Jindal Stainless as the material and technical partner — supplying the 160+ tonnes of 304 HRAP stainless steel.
The outcome:
Strength added, identity preserved
The restoration of Sadhana Bhawan showed how modern materials can strengthen ageing structures without altering what makes them meaningful. The most important outcome is that the intervention remained respectful. Stainless steel did not overpower the structure. It supported it. The future of heritage does not always need a new form. Sometimes, it only needs a stronger foundation.
