What are Stainless Steel Ingots

Stainless steel ingots are solid blocks of stainless steel formed by casting molten metal into moulds. They serve as intermediate products in the stainless steel manufacturing process, providing a starting point for further processing into various shapes and forms. Ingots are characterised by their uniform composition and are beneficial for producing high-quality stainless steel products.

Manufacturing of Ingots

  • Melting:

    Raw materials, including iron, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements, are melted in an electric arc furnace (EAF).

  • Refining:

    The molten alloy undergoes refining processes, such as Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD), to remove impurities and adjust its chemical composition.

  • Casting:

    The refined molten stainless steel is poured into moulds to form ingots. The casting process can vary depending on the desired ingot size and shape.

  • Solidification:

    The molten alloy solidifies within the moulds, forming ingots with a specific grain structure. Control over the cooling rate is crucial to achieve the desired mechanical properties.

  • Secondary Refining (Optional):

    For applications requiring high purity, ingots may undergo additional processes such as Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) to refine the material further.

Uses of Stainless Steel Ingots

Stainless steel ingots serve as a key raw material for processes such as forging, rolling, and extrusion, used to produce components like shafts, plates, rods, and wires. Their versatility supports a wide range of industrial and structural applications.
