Self-help groups, or SHGs, are commonly groups of women united by the purpose of empowerment. For decades, Jindal Stainless Foundation has been empowering women in its communities to take up entrepreneurial projects by forming into SHGs.
One such SHG, Meerabai, has been setting the right kind of example for the local community of Jajpur, Odisha. The group has tapped into the natural multi-tasking ability of women by creating avenues for diversified small businesses. The Meerabai SHG is thus involved in several economic activities such as food processing, sewing and stitching, dairy farming, running nursery, sourcing agricultural tools. In COVID times, the SHG was stitching face masks in bulk. The group has also been selling school uniforms to nearby school going students.
Their efforts have not only enabled these women to run their households financially, but have also provided them long deserved respect and recognition in the society.
